How to choose a café to work productively
Working from a café has become a familiar choice for office workers, freelancers and students. An open, unconstrained setting with coffee to “recharge” helps many people focus. But for a smooth “second office” experience, you need to know how to pick the right café instead of sitting anywhere and getting annoyed by weak wifi or noise.
A quiet space, the basic condition for focus
A good café for work doesn’t need to be silent, but it shouldn’t be so loud that you lose focus. Cafés with an upper floor or long tables are popular with people working, as they are separated from the order counter and chatting areas.
Lighting matters too. White light or natural light from a window keeps your mind alert and reduces drowsiness, especially in the morning or early afternoon.
Easy-to-miss but important criteria
Strong, stable wifi
- Avoid cafés with wifi “just for show”
- Run a speed test if needed
- Check whether many guests are using laptops
Plenty of power sockets
- Seats near walls, pillars or along long tables usually have sockets
- Some cafés hide sockets under the tables — look out for them
Seats that won’t hurt your back
- Chairs with a backrest are a big plus
- Tables shouldn’t be too low for a laptop
- Soft cushions, or wide wooden seats, also feel more comfortable
Music, the factor nobody mentions but that matters a lot
Many think music is just decoration, but the type of music strongly shapes your mood. Music that is too lively makes it hard to focus, while very sad music can drain your energy. Music that suits work usually includes:

- Lo-fi
- Light indie
- Instrumental jazz
- Acoustic piano or guitar
If you get distracted easily, look for cafés that keep the music at a gentle level, not imposed on the space.
Menu & prices: what decides whether you can stay long
Prices that are too high make it hard to work there regularly. A menu with too few choices makes staying long awkward, because you don’t know what else to order.

A “work-friendly” menu usually has:
- Espresso drinks (latte, cappuccino, Americano…)
- Fruit tea or light milk tea
- Soda or fresh juice
- Cakes on the side (brownie, cheesecake, tiramisu…)
Having cakes is a bonus, as many people like a little snack for a sugar boost while working.
Peak hours to avoid if you want quiet
A café isn’t always suitable for work. Timing makes a big difference:
- Morning (8 – 10:30 am): good energy, little noise
- Early afternoon (1:30 – 4 pm): relaxed, highly focused
- Evening (after 7 pm): busy and loud, more young people out with friends than studying
Knowing the right time helps you find a quiet space without switching cafés all the time.
The right café can double your productivity
Choosing a café to work from isn’t just about wifi or good coffee. It’s about finding a space that helps you focus, where you can sit for hours and still feel comfortable and at ease. When you find “the right spot”, you’ll be surprised how much more you get done, how much lighter deadlines feel and how much better your mood is.
